Our 15 Minutes of Fame

Wife-carrying? Why not?! There are a lot of strange sports out there, but what other competitions allow couples to compete together for a chance at the woman's weight in beer, 5 times her weight in cash, and a stab at fame at the world level? And practice? That's overrated as well. Infact, Ehrin worked overnight at MGH, slept three hours in the car, while April drove to Sunday River, Maine. Twenty-one couples competed in carrying their wives through an uphill ski slope, over obstacles and through a muddy pool of water. Aside from exhaustion, the greatest challenge was the weather, with a continued down pour, ensuring that the water hazard at the end of a course was deep enough that April had to hold her breath and Ehrin had his nipples wet. In the end, the showdown was between the Boston underdogs and a burly couple from Rumford, Maine. It was the upset of the century, as we carried away the trophies and a berth at the world-wife carrying championships in Finland. For full details, check out
